Grinding & Deburring and Indoor Air Quality

Overview

Grinding and Deburring

Both grinding and deburring are finishing processes used in the production of goods and materials. While grinding uses a grinding wheel or grinder to remove large amounts of material and smooth down the surface of a workpiece, deburring commonly uses deburers, grinders, files, brushes or sanders to remove sharp or raised edges known as burrs left by the initial machining stage. Grinding and deburring are used in the jewelry, medical and dental industries among others.

The Dangers of Grinding & Deburring Dust and Fumes

Depending on the type of application, grinding and deburring can create metal, composite rubber or fiberglass dust that is dangerous if inhaled. These dusts can cause a range of health effects, mostly concerning the lungs. But the lungs aren’t the only organs at risk as some particles may dissolve in the bloodstream and travel throughout the body affecting the liver, kidneys and even the brain.

Grinding and deburring dust can become airborne and spread throughout a work environment very quickly. To protect workers and prevent damage to costly machinery and electronic equipment, eliminating it at source is a must. A HEPA dust extractor that captures, filters and removes dust as it is produced, along with an effective air purifier, keeps air clean and safe to breathe.
